Around the turn of the century I was visiting a friend in Nashville who played me one of those generic “Top 10″ praise and worship CDs.
This one was different, though – a really good male vocalist sang all the songs with an awesome female on BGVs.
This voice belonged to a young worship leader from Canada named Matt Brouwer who went on to make his own recordings (the awesome female was Jill Paquette.) I’ve followed Matt’s music for years and had the chance to meet him in person a few months ago when I was in Houston writing with Kyle Worsham.
Matt was leading worship in a movie theater church plant. His latest CD, Till the Sunrise, came out recently and I got to talk to him about his producer – the venerable Michael Omartian (Long time CCM lovers will remember Michael as a secular producer years ago for such pop luminaries as Christopher Cross, Peter Cetera and Donna Summer. He then produced CCM artists like Amy Grant, Carman, Bryan Duncan and 4 Him in the 90s.)
Matt’s had an illustrious career so far – he’s won a Juno Award (Canada’s Grammys) and his cover of the Goo Goo Doll’s Better Days even appeared on a TV show.
I love Till the Sunrise, if for no other reason than Omartian’s production is such a refreshing change from the constant, monotonous drone of Hillsongish guitars. This CD is more of the singer-songwriter variety but Matt threw in a wonderful worship tune which he’s graciously allowed me to post here at WorshipIdeas.com. Download a free MP3 and transposed chord charts below for his worship song Everlasting and please check out the full CD at his website and iTunes.

BeckyI don’t understand the mix of your recent posts. This song sounds great, but then, it would also fit in with most of the rest of the worship music you called “housewife schlock” on Christian radio.

Don ChapmanThe issue is not eradicating “housewife schlock” but having an alternative. Christian radio is filled with the same bland, middle of the road family friendly music – let’s have some variety (my local Christian radio station actually uses the phrase “family friendly!” in their promotions.) I can remember Christian radio 20 years ago – you’d hear a pretty Amy Grant ballad followed by a rocking Petra song. I like pretty ballads and rocking music, let’s have it all.

Beckyhmm… I guess I’m blessed to have a good variety to which I can listen. Our “safe for the whole family” station doesn’t include Skillet but we do hear Switchfoot and TobyMac mixed in. There’s always Air1 if I get bored. (which is also family friendly, even though they play LeCrae and harder Christian rock) Who decides what is family friendly anyway? IMO, no genre of music is bad for kids to listen to, only the content…
Anyway, isn’t the family friendly moniker to try to get unbelievers who don’t want kids listening to profanity to listen to the station?

Don ChapmanHaha I think TobyMac has slipped into the housewife category
Sure, there isn’t anything wrong with family friendly Christian housewife music – it’s just all that’s out there for the vast majority of Christian stations.
