The Christmas season often brings a unique receptivity to the Gospel message. Why do people seem more open right now? It could be the realization that commercialism falls short of bringing true contentment. For others, it’s the sheer weight of history, that the Incarnate birth has sparked celebration and discussion for centuries! Many also feel a deep sense of nostalgia, missing the simple story, a bygone era, or loved ones, and ultimately, they miss Jesus. Whether disconnected believers or those who’ve never heard, there’s a recognized void, a missing piece only Christ can fill.
This Christmas, worship leaders have a powerful opportunity: Give them Jesus. While planning is important, sometimes simple is best! Ensure the name of Jesus is front and center: say it, sing it, celebrate it. Lean into the familiar and sing the great carols like “Away in a Manger,” “Angels We Have Heard On High,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” and “Joy to the World!” Feel free to add creative twists, but remember the power of simple, “old school” reverence to keep the focus clear.
The challenge extends beyond the worship service. Encourage your congregation with tools to easily invite friends to Christmas events and worship. Integrate “Good News” invitations into every ministry event, program, and service. Flood your ministry’s social media with content that points directly to Jesus. Be joyful, share love, and avoid getting political or judgmental about the culture. Remember Jesus’ humble mission: “So the Father has sent me, so I send you” (John 20:21). Lead great worship and ministry, care for your volunteers, and be a light, but above all else, resolve to give them Jesus this season.
