If you’ve led worship long enough, you’ve experienced it. A guitar cable suddenly dies. The wireless microphone battery gives up five minutes before service. The keyboard sustain pedal somehow disappears into another dimension. If you’re in a portable church, you’ll swear your equipment grows legs between Sunday mornings. In fact, if Pixar ever made a movie about church equipment coming to life and attempting their own Great Escape when we aren’t looking, worship leaders would mistake it for a documentary.
All these problems have an uncanny ability to show up at the worst possible time too. Thankfully, many of them can be solved with one simple habit: carry a worship stash bag. A stash bag isn’t meant to replace your church’s equipment. It’s simply a collection of small items that can rescue a Sunday when something unexpected happens. Think of it as cheap insurance for your sanity.
Audio & Electronics
These are the items that seem to fail most often.
- Fresh batteries (AA, AAA, or 9V depending on your gear)
- Extra XLR cable
- Extra guitar cable
- Keyboard sustain pedal
- Spare power supply for your keyboard or pedalboard
- Direct box (DI)
One extra cable can save you twenty minutes of troubleshooting.
Power Essentials
Electricity has a funny way of never being where you need it. Keep these on hand:
- Surge protector
- Small extension cord
- 3-prong to 2-prong adapter
- A few Velcro cable ties
You’ll use these far more often than you think, especially if your church meets in a school, theater, or rented facility.
Instrument Rescue Kit
Small accessories disappear constantly. Throw these into a zippered pouch:
- Drum sticks
- Guitar picks
- Extra guitar strings
- Capo
- Extra set of in-ear monitor earbuds (even an inexpensive backup pair)
None of these take up much space, but each one can save a rehearsal or service.
Tools & Fix-It Supplies
You don’t need a full toolbox, just enough to solve common problems.
- Multi-tool (pliers, screwdrivers, scissors, knife)
- Duct tape or gaffer tape
- Small flashlight
- Zip ties
Loose hardware, broken clips, and mystery rattles seem to happen every Sunday. A few basic tools go a long way.
Office Supplies
These aren’t glamorous, but you’ll reach for them often.
- Pens
- Permanent marker
- Notepad
- Binder clips
Someone always needs to write down a last-minute change.
Don’t Forget the Human Stuff
Technology isn’t the only thing that breaks. Keep a few comfort items nearby:
- Bottle of water
- Throat lozenges
- Tissues
- Pain reliever
Your future team and Sunday-morning self will thank you.
A Humble Hero
Most of the items on this list cost only a few dollars, but they can prevent a great deal of stress. You probably won’t need everything every week, but when you do need it, you’ll be incredibly glad it’s there. You’ll also be the hero in more than a few situations, but you’re much too humble to care about such things.
Take twenty minutes this week and build your own worship stash bag. Hopefully, you’ll rarely have to open it, but when someone asks, “Does anybody happen to have…?” you’ll be the person smiling.
